Allotment Holder Saves Author in Sea Resue

posted 30 Jun 2011 02:59 by John Hoffman   [ updated 30 Jun 2011 03:04 ]

Dear John,

Many thanks for helping us moor up our barge at Southend Pier on Friday night, most kind of you and a real pleasure to meet you. As promised attached is the flyer for the forthcoming Festival of Literature of the Sea which I am involved in which is taking place soon at Chalkwell Park. If there is anything you would like to come to let me know and I will put you on the guest list. Please do pass this information on to anyone you know who would be interested in coming along. If they want to book tickets they should look at this link:

We had quite a wild night at the end of the pier Friday, very stormy, boat rocked violently all night, I didn't get a wink of sleep and both myself and the other girl sharing my room heard lots of voices outside the boat shouting from below the pier, spooky.

2006 Government Report on Allotment Numbers Published May 2011

posted 4 Jun 2011 14:01 by John Hoffman

HERAA can report the number fell. The report was published later.

Research produced by the university of Derby in 2006, based on a partial survey of local authorities, reported that in the period 1996 to 2006, the number of allotment plots fell by 50,630. The report, commissioned but unpublished by the previous Government, was posted up on the DCLG website on 6 May, available at:

Government Back Down on Removing Protection for Allotments

posted 4 Jun 2011 13:50 by John Hoffman   [ updated 4 Jun 2011 14:05 ]

Stella Creesy contacted HERAA with news on the issue.

The Department has no intention of removing statutory protections for allotments and, as such, we have no plans to remove local authorities’ statutory duties to provide allotments. We will continue to support local communities who want to use local spaces for community food growing, and to protect existing land for this purpose, for example, through new neighbourhood planning provisions in the Localism Bill, which will provide a new right for communities to shape their local areas, including the means to boost allotment provision. The Department published a news release to this effect on 7 May, available at:The Department has no intention of removing statutory protections for allotments and, as such, we have no plans to remove local authorities’ statutory duties to provide allotments. Floods new to the south path plots

posted 29 Apr 2011 13:00 by John Hoffman   [ updated 8 May 2011 03:56 ]

The south path tank in the middle of the plots has been blamed for a small leak.

It is causing flooding of an allotment shared by three parties and it is causing a bit if a rumpus.

Chris John Jay and Greg emptied the tank and lifted it after the royal wedding

no leak was found in fact an ants nest was under the tank so no water to speak of at all.

However the beens have drowned and the potato trench has water in it

We left 50mm of water in the tank to see if it drops by saturday.

I suggest the alotment holders have dug down into the sub soil and stipped the top soil away, however the soil is undeniably sodden.......

any idea anybody
John

Notice of Manure Delivery

posted 15 Oct 2009 13:21 by John Hoffman   [ updated 23 Apr 2011 04:44 ]

Since the lorry will no longer be delivering the manure we have been trailing a new system where by the stable owners will bring the horse down to the allotments if it looks like it is about to create some manure.

This has led to some seriously competitive behaviour among the keen south path allotment holders who have been manure starved since the new gates where installed.

Pete the social worker, underground Pete and John "Numbers"  Patrick were involved in three wheel barrow pile up.

The resultant crash and ensuing arguments and shouting has meant that the horse is now constipated and has not produced any manure for 3 weeks now. We need as much manure as we can get and the pile up at the old small gates on the south path was in full view of the members of the public waiting at the bust stop. This is not good for our reputation in the community and also brings on questions from the animal welfare people, and rightly so. Calm down gents. It is bad enough with the lawnmowers, but it might be we have to reintroduce the time consuming and much loathed wheel-barrow tachographs again. Frankly I don't need the paper work so please calm down.

Speeding Problem

posted 15 Oct 2009 13:20 by John Hoffman   [ updated 23 Apr 2011 04:45 ]

Please would people reduce the speed of their lawnmowers.

In a recent incident the new speed gun clocked Arthur with a qualcast (QC180, push along cylinder) exceeding the 30MPH limit by 5 mile per hour.

We may have to reduce speeds down to 20MPH across the site  and have a Zero Tolerance for this summer if we don't slow down.

We all know that the sunny weather and good hard dry soil is a pleasure to mow but on the south  path you can easily find your self mowing at 50 to 60MPH.

Please take it easy.
